[edit] On the agenda for today's call

  • UPDATES -- News/idea updates from anyone on the call, particularly about potential collaborators or important themes (journalistic or technological) to consider. (Eg: Status of NCSPJ convening; Josh Wilson's "Save the News" event)
  • WHAT IS THIS? -- Reaffirm once again the vision/statement of purpose -- check if it meets our needs, balancing networking vs. producing products/results/innovation.
  • GETTING READY -- Hear and react to ideas from Kara Andrade and David Cohn about pre-convening interactivity tools (to accelerate our ability to make the event itself action-inducing)
  • LOGISTICS -- An update from Bill Densmore and Peggy Holman on timetable invitation/registration/questions, pricing/stipends and schedule for affirming "process" of event. Pre-registration/reservations to open around Jan. 15; event process confirmation not until end of March.
  • OUTREACH -- Who should be inviting, and when
  • SPONSORS -- Reminder to suggest appropriate sponsors or co-convenors who will add to our technology and journalism breadth and depth.

[edit] Consideration of vision/purpose

We are working with this high-level vision statement, but want to add a practical "what's this all about" intention:

To begin growing a diverse, well-connected network at the intersection of journalism and technology focused on revitalizing participatory democracy ... through seeding innovative ideas ... deepening relationships . . . and inspiring action.

The version that emerged from the meeting at Yahoo: The convergence of journalism and technology to invent the next generation news ecology.

[edit] Practical intention for the JTM-SV convening

We intend to answer how technology innovation can support journalism and participatory democracy. The event working subtitle is: "JTM-SV: Innovation, democracy and a new ecology of news." We intend to stage a conceptual mashup that merges the core values of journalism with breakthrough technology. Journalists are coming to Silicon Valley not as missionaries, but as researchers, as if to say: "Our hammers are broken, our nails bent, let us tell you about the holes we must fill, can we work with you to make new tools that sustain participatory democracy and community?"

[edit] A process, not an event

We are starting a process, by late January, which will feed the April 30-May 3 event and last beyond it. Our success at creating change, products and purpose when we meet in April will depend upon the pre-convening work we encourage and facilitate. We'll do this by asking participants to answer questions, propose solutions and working projects.

[edit] The two-word shorthand

Help us invent a one- or two-word shorthand for this event. "Journacamp"? "NewsTools2008"?

[edit] The mix -- expertise and demographic

Please think of who you will invite in these arenas (and any others?):

[edit] Tech folks

  • Bloggers
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Venture capitalists/angels
  • Usability experts
  • Social network creators
  • Vendor relationship/persistent identity crowd
  • Webzine communities
  • PodCamp/multimedia creators
  • GSP/digital camera/mapping
  • Digital ink and tablet technologists
  • Archivists
  • Demographic / advertising marketers
  • Semantic/taxonomy/search experts
  • Large portals

[edit] Other folks

  • Mainstream media
  • Independent or "citizen" media
  • Media reformers or accountability advocates
  • Media educators
  • Hollywood/entertainment folks
  • CSR folks

[edit] Demographics

  • Age
  • Race
  • Interfaith
  • Gender
  • Geography

[edit] The five most disruptive technologies for civic news?

We're considering arranging "latest news" updates from experts in these five areas (are they the right five?):

  1. Mobile computing/telephony
  2. Digital tablets/books
  3. Social networks
  4. Local search
  5. Instant audience measurement / personalization

[Tom Johnson: Seems to me we might also be considering rapid developments in data acquisition, data mining [see [1] and presentation of data [See [2] which used [3] to produce the initial graphs. These are just a couple examples; most notably missing are the fundamental GIS tools.]

[edit] Unpacking newsroom systems

To help technologists/developers/entrepreneurs to understand the challenge, should we map the operation of today's newsrooms, so the gathering can wire tomorrow news-spaces?

[edit] The design/build track

For those who want to go right under the hood, and not just talk about what the car should look like, we are considering what processes might best enable a "design/build" workshop mentality, perhaps with three teams collaborating to invent solutions to a commonly designated problem.
