Twenty years ago I managed a low power television station and two radio stations in the Aleutian Islands. I learned about news media from the ground up. Since those days I have spent my career working with all types of NGOs, primarily as a communication and development director. I use the power of media to raise money, awareness and support. I am currently working with an organization in Washington State, focused on ending homelessness. This is an emerging role for us, and comes after a lengthy strategic planning process. A key component of our work now is systems change and policy reform. We will be building a grassroots movement and a strong advocacy voice to gain public support and influence political will. My role within the organization is to use emerging technology to effectively tell the story, move people to action and galvanize funders in order to build community and support the democratic process.
