managing director Media on the Spot, Amsterdam
Gabriëlla Meerbach grew up in a family of a newspaper editor, which resulted in a lifelong critical fascination with the media. She is an independent researcher, international consultant and manages Media on the Spot (MOS). MOS fosters bottom-up communications for participatory democracy thru innovative use of the media (traditional and new) in young democracies and countries in development. MOS actively seeks to develop new strategies to that effect. (cf. Report as independent observer of presidential elections in Senegal, February 2007, Contribution APAnews.)
With a degree in linguistics, mass communications and mass psychology (University of Amsterdam) she taught various aspects of traditional journalism (print, radio and tv), from 1982 – 2001, at Fontys Hogeschool Journalistiek, a Dutch Polytechnic. She initiated an international exchange program with media all over Africa for her journalism students. Meerbach researched the benefits of telephone usage in the pre-cellular era by women and youngsters in rural Senegal (IIC, Intermedia 19 (2) 21-26). She contributed a chapter on the History of Journalism Education in The Netherlands in: Journalism Education in Europe and North America, an International Comparison (Hamptonpress 2003)
Managing Director of Media on the Spot (MOS) (1998) and later Projects Coordinator for Radio Nederland Training Centre, Gabriëlla designed the projects and conducted the implementation phase of a series of national consultations resulting in capacity building of professional and community radio in Eastern Europe and Africa, in particular a program named Informotrac, in Senegal, Guinea Bissau and Sierra Leone (2002-2004).
