Jimmy McClung spent his newspaper career working for C.K. McClatchy at the Sacramento Bee investigating the California mob and doing other forms of what he calls "project journalism." Now 67 and long retired, McClung wonders how democracy will survive if long-form project journalism becomes too expensive for news organizations to undertake. He says publishers matter.
