"I love journalism, I love the community. I feel like it is what I was born to do. I have been doing it since I was 8 years old. years ago. I love interviewing people. I love the give and take that you get. I believe in this new medium, I believe everyone was burned out on the mainstream press, everyone was burned out corporate journalism and there are now new possibilities with the technology to make it really better. So, yea -- it's an exciting thing to do every morning."
Paul Bass, in a Nov. 1, 2005 interview with the Media Giraffe Project

UPDATE:

  • The August/September edition of Context, the quarterly of the center for Communcation and Community at UCLA includes an article by Paul Bass describing operation of The New Haven Independent.

Paul Bass is a different kind of embedded journalist. Raised in New York City suburbs, Bass came to college at Yale University and never really left New Haven, Conn.

Now in his late-40s, Bass worked for the city's once-family-owned-daily, edited the alternative weekly and then took a break to work on a book. When he was finished, he realized he couldn't stay away from a newsroom.

But instead of returning to the established ones, he created his own, in a spare bedroom of his urban home. Now he's embedded in the daily political, cultural and social life, as editor/founder of the New Haven Independent, a non-profit which publishes one of the most news-rich local online news blogs in the United States.

In a one-hour Media Giraffe Project interview taped Jan. 16, 2008, Bass talks about his motivation and passion.

  • On Aug. 8, 2006, Paul Bass wrote an essay at "PressThink," the weblog of New York University journalism professor Jay Rosen, describing why, after 25 years of working as a reporter in New Haven, he took a break to write a book, and decided not to go back to a traditional print publication. He decided to start the New Haven Independent website. But in a key decision, he decided that it would be not-for-profit.
