WORKSHOP: The Art of Possibility and Radical Appreciation, near Jerusalem, Israel, July 8-10

Journalism That Matters Discussion Group - Thu, 06/20/2013 - 15:00
The stories that we tell ourselves shape the way we see the world. And that shapes our behavior. In his ground breaking work, The Image of the Future, social scientist Fred Polak tells us that cultures without a positive image of their future die within a generation. So cultural narrative is more critical than many of us realize. And, as cultural storytellers, journalists have a unique role to play in influencing the narrative that weaves our societies together. In fact, that's the reason that I got involved with journalists.

Job opening in Vancouver, BC

Journalism That Matters Discussion Group - Thu, 06/20/2013 - 15:00
Hi all,

I recently spent time with Peter Pula, Axiom News Founder and CEO. Appreciative Inquiry, a practice that also informs Journalism That Matters, is at the heart of Axiom's approach to reporting. They call it generative journalism because they follow the energy of what's working. And that tends to generate productive outcomes.

What does 3D printing have to do with journalism?

Journalism That Matters Discussion Group - Thu, 06/20/2013 - 15:00
Hi JTM…

I'm really excited for Journalism That Matters and the National Conference for Media Reform next week in Denver, and looking forward to seeing many of you out there.

We've built a really unique event. We have a public-square style Commons at the center of the space, which will feature live music, poetry readings, 3-D printing, soapbox speeches and wearable computers, 80+ sessions and hands-on workshops, a film festival, a dance party, a comedy showcase -- there is truly something for everyone<[link]>.

We just posted the complete list of sessions for the National Conference for Media Reform: [link]. I'm happy to talk to anyone who is interested or has more questions about the conference. Give me a call and let's chat and strategize about what you can get out of NCMR.

Just a little rant against youtube and Fox Studios

Journalism That Matters Discussion Group - Thu, 06/20/2013 - 15:00

Here are the facts. The movie Grand Canyon (1991) contains a scene
relatively early in the movie. Kevin Kline is returning from a Laker's
game and his car goes kaput in a rather tough part of town and he calls
for a tow.

The other main character in the movie played by Danny Glover meets Kline
