U.S. slips way down to 47th place in a press-freedom index because of Occupy report harassment
Right now, the United States is not one of the nations most supportive of a free press, according to an annual assessment by Reporters Without Borders. It slipped from 20th place to 47th place in the latest rankings:

Welcome to Justin Arenstein
From Justin:
Hi everyone. I'm an African-based investigative journalist and open data advocate, who works right across the continent for a number of major media, plus industry bodies. I'm currently involved in strengthening existing Centres for Investigative Reporting (CIRs), setting up a network of HacksHackers chapters, managing a $1m annual innovation fund for journalism, and setting up a j-incubator with resident geeks & data viz ninjas. I hate needlessly re-inventing the wheel, so would love to tap into the insight of the folk on this group. Cheers, Justin

Help Identify "Media Deserts" for research project
Hi Folks,
Journalism That Matters Media Deserts/News Oasis project is based on a
national map I'm building that looks at places where news and
information sources are scarce. Many of you have started projects in
your area because you saw this lack. If you have a geographical or
topical "desert" that you can help identify, please let me know.

The Future of Occupy, a news curation site of the Occupy movement, is published
For several months, during the unfolding events of the Occupy
movement, supporters, media and world observers have been wondering,
'where is this movement heading?' Developing both some signposts and a
compass for that question, we provide the media, activists, academics,
and an engaged public with curated information and insights about the

BOOK: JTM alumna authors book about cognition and communities
I got an email today from Sue Ellen isacksen (Christian) at Western
Michigan University, a multi-JTM event alumna. She's just published a book
that could help journalists become more sensitive to their communities,
and tell more relevant stories.
The book is entitled: "Overcoming Bias: A
Journalist's Guide to Culture and Context."

Jargonwatch: What are some of the most obscure terms for important ideas?
Hi, ya, folks. For a paper I am writing, please share some of the terms
you and your respected colleagues use that might be obscure or even
incomprehensible for the people less involved with civic media and the
future of news.
Data catalogs, SEO, digital inclusion, STEM--what terms can you send me
that I might include in this list?

QUESTION: Do you buy the assertion by Jeff Cole at USC-Annenberg in an upcoming paper that many dailies will be OOB in five years? Our privacy lost, no trust in social media? Why or why not? What to do?
This is a pickup of a news release from USC-Annenberg's Center for Digital Future. The PDF version is at their website at the address shown below if you'd rather read clean PDF, but this plain-text version can be excerpted and commented upon more readily. Cole is opening an important set of debates. The assertion of timing -- five years or something else -- isn't as important as **what to do about it now.** And do you agree that our privacy is lost? Is that acceptable? Should, or can, legislation restore it? What opportunity is presented by the finding that a majority of people don't trust social media?

I recently spoke with Jane Stevens about [link], which just won an EPPY for Editor & Publisher for Best Community Service on a Media-Affiliated Website with fewer than 250,000 unique monthly visitors.
Jane was passionate about the importance of the interaction between journalists and community as a result of their WellCommons experience. She just wrote a terrific piece about it for the Knight Digital Media Center:

for journalism.s future as a public good. It addresses a basic question of
